I decided to change this meme up for books. Because I am a raging nerd, and I'm curious to see to what extent people know movies better than books. ;D

1. Pick 15 of your favourite books.
2. Go to SparkNotes/Literary Quotations/whereverthehellyouwant and find a quote from each book.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
4. Fill in the book title once it's guessed.
5. NO GOOGLING / whatever other way you can think to cheat. Fools.

And when there was a series, I just chose one of the books. Like that doesn't give anything away.

1. Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

2. We will not pay for our freedom with a single promise of silence.

3. The most terrible of motives and the most unanswerable of responses: Because.

4. Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.

5. We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything.

6. You are our captain and our banner. The Dark Lord has Nine. But we have One, mightier than they: the White Rider. He has passed through the fire and the abyss, and they shall fear him. We will go where he leads. - Lord of the Rings - guessed by [insanejournal.com profile] macguffin!

7. You are too young to understand it ... but sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of--oh, of your father.

8. It's a strange thing, but when you are dreading something, and would give anything to slow down time, it has a disobliging habit of speeding up. - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - guessed by [insanejournal.com profile] goodpilgrim!

9. They said they would rather be outlaws a year in Sherwood Forest than President of the United States forever.

10. To lose one parent, Mr Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness. - The Importance of Being Earnest - guessed by [insanejournal.com profile] goodpilgrim!

11. The flies have conquered the flypaper.

12. Nay, faith, let me not play a woman; I have a beard coming. - A Midsummer Night's Dream - guessed by [insanejournal.com profile] goodpilgrim!

13. Fredo, you're my older brother, and I love you. But don't ever take sides with anyone against the Family again. Ever. - The Godfather - guessed by [insanejournal.com profile] macguffin!

14. Land is the only thing in the world that amounts to anything, for ’tis the only thing in this world that lasts. - Gone With the Wind - guessed by [insanejournal.com profile] gemius!

15. I insist upon my rooms being beautiful! I can’t abide ugliness in factories! In we go, then! But do be careful, my dear children! Don’t lose your heads! Don’t get overexcited! Keep very calm! - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - guessed by [insanejournal.com profile] macguffin!

6. LOOOOOOOOORD OF THE RINGS.

7. SOUNDS FAMILIAR.

10. SOUNDS SOMEWHAT FAMILIAR.

13. UM...The Godfather? Was there a "Fredo" in that? The NEVER BETRAY THE FAMILY theme would fit into it.

15. CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY!

Also, #13 sounds like that part in The Royal Tenenbaums. "You're my brother. I love you." "STOP SAYING THAT."

I totally think 14 is Gone With the Wind. And I hope I'm right because if I'm wrong hell if I know anything else. Though 1 sounds really familiar.

10 is from THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST
12 is from A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT DREAM

And I know I should know a bunch of the others (I'm pretty sure 8 is JKR, I remember the "disobliging habit of speeding up" part, but hell if I know what book), but alas!

Book quotes are hard to remember!

FUCKING WIN. Man I've read it ages ago but the whole 'land' thing sorta gave it away.

I really think I know it but i can't think of it.

YAY. And I totally didn't even realize that the only ones I could really guess were plays, and so probably the only reason I remember quotes are because I remember performances/movies more. XD

YAY!!

I HAVEN'T READ #10, NOW THAT I SEE WHAT IT IS. Seven still sounds really familiar. And is #1 a Terry Pratchett novel? MAYBE?
